Introduction

Hello All
First off, welcome to my blog, Rock N' Roll Appropriation.  A blog dedicated to analysing one of rock's finest, oldest, most revered and least discussed traditions, the taking of a little bands song, jazzing it up a bit, and making it big.

The essence of this blog will be to discuss the following;
  • The Probability; of a band having consciously stolen a song, as opposed to coincedence...most rock bands only use a maximum of 12 notes, after all.  Relating to the biggest recent controversy, I find it quite hard to imagine that members of Coldplay sit around listening to solo shred guitarists.  Not impossible, though.
  • The Quality; of the song steal.  Some bands acknowledge the stolen song (outside of credits) but often times, they have made a massive improvement on the original.  Led Zeppelin are commonly accused of plagiarism, but their version's are invariably better than the original.  Who would rather listen to Joan Baez's version of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You?  In that instance, they changed most of the lyrics, the music, the structure
  • The Repurcussions; of the plagiarism.  Some bands have been sued to the heaven's, some have lost the rights their stolen megahit's, some have carried on happily, blissfully ignoring the bleating of the less well known musicians.
I'll be doing the analyses in two forms, depending on the level of depth required.  There are some songs which will require a lot of analysis, and they will get their own posts.  Other times, I'll be covering a whole band and their steals, if there's not too much too look at.  I'll attempt to provide as many sources as I can (clips, transcriptions, interviews, etc). Hopefully, if i'm able, I'll update older posts as I go along.

Anyway hope people find this relatively interesting.  If you agree/disagree with anything, have anything to add, know something I don't, or just want to make yourself heard, then PLEASE comment or get in touch and I'll do my best to get back to you.
